September is Suicide Prevention Month.  The federal Indian Health Service identifies suicide as the second-leading cause of death behind unintentional injuries among Indian children and young adults, and statistics show young Native Americans commit suicide at a rate more than three times the national average.

CHIEF will begin its first 2011-2012 Native Christian Leadership Forum by addressing the role of the Native Christian community becoming spritual first responders to the tragedy of suicide.  Rev. Tim Tsoodle, Kiowa/Taos Pueblo will be sharing with us how as a faith based community we can help through community action by identifying individuals at risk,  responding to suicidal attemps, and ultilizing suicide prevention tools and resources.

Tom Claus, Mohawk, Founder of CHIEF Inc. shared at the Thursday morning plenary session at SONRISE 2011. His message was directed to the Native Christian Leaders entitled “Becoming a Godly Servant of Christ Jesus.” After sixty five years of ministry among Native tribes in the Americas he shared of the defenses against the dangers for Native Christian leaders. What a message to all leaders in the church, on the council, and among our families!

Joshua Suane, Quechua, shared in the morning devotional of SONRISE 2011.  In 1993, after the death of his brother, Romulo, he committed his life to Jesus Christ and was discipled and encourage to go back to his people of Peru.  Today there are over 1,200 Quechua churches and new ministries to reach other indigenous tribes of Peru.  How our hearts were challeged to go make disciples of all nations!
