Huron Claus, President of CHIEF Inc. interviewed a number of Native leaders asking the question, “How can we pray for the Indigenous peoples of the Americas and beyond?”

Becoming a Godly Servant of Christ Jesus

Tom Claus, Mohawk, Founder of CHIEF Inc. shared at the Thursday morning plenary session at SONRISE 2011. His message was directed to the Native Christian Leaders entitled “Becoming a Godly Servant of Christ Jesus.” After sixty five years of ministry among Native tribes in the Americas he shared of the defenses against the dangers for Native Christian leaders. What a message to all leaders in the church, on the council, and among our families!

Trauma, Trials, and Some Timeless Truths

Craig Smith, Ojibwe, Director of Tribal Rescue for The Christian and Missionary Alliance shared at one of the workshops of SONRISE 2011. Craig’s life and ministry was radically changed in June of 2009 when he survived a horrendous car accident while preparing for summer ministry. After eighteen operations, physical therapy, and meeting many medical specialists, he shared his unforgettable journey and the spiritual truths he discovered in relationship with God. What a message of encouragement to all attending!

Discipleship Among Indigenous Peoples of Peru

Joshua Suane, Quechua, shared in the morning devotional of SONRISE 2011. In 1993, after the death of his brother, Romulo, he committed his life to Jesus Christ and was discipled and encourage to go back to his people of Peru. Today there are over 1,200 Quechua churches and new ministries to reach other indigenous tribes of Peru. How our hearts were challeged to go make disciples of all nations!

Sonrise 2011- Wed. PM Workshop

Bold Baatar, Mogolian, shared in one of the afternoon workshops of SONRISE 2011. He shared how Christ impacted his country of Mongolia through the lives of Native Americans visiting his people in 1991. Bold was the very first Mongoian pastor to a church of 35 to 40 individuals. Today there are more than 100,000 followers of Jesus Christ.

Spiritual Awakening in our Native Nations

There is an excitement in the air and a stirring of great expectation as we are eleven days from the SONRISE 2011 International Leadership Summit. God is doing something in our midst among First Nations/Native American peoples of the Americas. Indigenous Christian leaders are making plans to come from their remote villages of Alaska, the northern reserves of Canada, the everglades of Florida, and the jungles and high mountains of Mexico, Guatemala, and Peru.

As people prepare to come they are already telling stories of Native gatherings of worship and praise where their people desire to see God glorified among the Nations. Gatherings such as the New Life Native Musicale which draws hundreds of Alaskan Natives and other followers of Christ together during the Fur Rendezvous in prayer, praise and testimony of God’s goodness.

We have heard of a gathering of First Nations people of Canada that have come together to reclaim the Truth of God. First Nations people that desire to hear God’s voice and demonstrate their love by living their lives according to His design.

Others are asking for prayer as First Nations/Native American followers of Christ are coming together and seeking God’s face for a spiritual revival among our countries of North America.

In just a few days, Native youth are gathering together representing a variety of tribes in the Southwest with passionate hearts to love God and serve their Nations.

God is moving in the hearts of Native tribes south of the border in Latin America as well. Preparations are being made to bring approximately 3,000 together in the jungles of Brazil to better understand God’s Word for their lives.

Will you to pray for the SONRISE 2011 Leadership Summit, March 14 – 17 in Phoenix, Arizona? Christian Native leaders will come together to focus on three major issues of concern in Native ministry: Evangelism, Discipleship and Ministry of Helps.

SONRISE 2011: A Spiritual Awakening in our Native Nations

In March of 1975, approximately 100 Native Christian leaders came together in Albuquerque, New Mexico to discuss the current efforts of evangelism, discipleship and church growth through the Christian Church among the indigenous peoples of the western hemisphere. It was then that Dr. Billy Graham stated,

“The Native American is a sleeping giant. He is awakening. The original Americans could become the evangelist who will help win America for Christ!”

According to the Institute of Native American studies, an affiliate of the US Center for World Mission, there are now 51.1 million indigenous peoples in 24 countries of North, Central and South America including one tribe in the Caribbean. Wycliffe Bible Translators publishes a listing of over 1,200 living languages spoken by these people.

Surveys suggest that more than 73% of the total populations of indigenous peoples of the Americas are unreached with the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.

After years of missionary efforts of evangelism and outreach the greatest need of the hour is to strengthen the Native American fellowship within the Body of Christ, thus reinforcing the developing Christian leadership of our churches and of our communities at large. Strong Native leadership means a strong Native church which will reach out to evangelize not only their own people more effectively but corporately gain a heart to evangelize the nations of the world.

For more than thirty six years CHIEF has conducted Native pastor’s conferences, and short-term discipleship training institutes on First Nations/Native American reservations and in urban areas across North America. In 1981 CHIEF hosted the First International Congress on Evangelism among Native American Leadership. In 1992 CHIEF hosted the International Native American Congress on Evangelism, Discipleship and Church Growth.

On March 14 – 17, 2011, CHIEF will be hosting an International SonRise 2011 Leadership Summit – “A Spiritual Awakening in our Native Nations” Conference, in Phoenix, Arizona.

More than fifty tribal Christian leaders, pastors, evangelists, from Canada, USA, Mexico, Guatemala, Peru, Brazil and Mongolia are invited to speak. Twenty four workshops on Indigenous Evangelism, Discipleship and Community Impact will be presented during the conference.

Each day there will be exhibits, panel discussions, and opportunities to network with key Native leaders and ministries currently working among the many tribal groups in the western hemisphere.

CHIEF is appealing to the Christian community of churches, ministries, schools, study groups and individuals to set those specific days of March 14 -17, 2011 to pray for Native evangelism, discipleship, and community impact of the indigenous peoples of the Americas.

The Many Nations One Saviour 2011 Event

May I ask you a question? How many churches would you estimate are in your city? How many are there in a five mile radius? Did you know that over 63% of Native American peoples live in the urban cities of our Nation (US)?

Just two weeks ago I was in the city of Los Angeles, California. I discovered Los Angeles holds the largest Native American city population in the US. There are approximately 188.000 Native American/First Nations people living in the Greater LA area. There are only 8 active Native churches reaching less than 2,000 peoples?

In my home town of Phoenix, Arizona, there are over 94,000 Native peoples living in the greater Phoenix area. There are ten to twelve Native churches reaching less than 1,500 – 2000.

It is CHIEF’s desire to raise the awareness that there is a great need to connect with our Native American/First Nations people in the neighborhoods of our own cities. We often think of going to the reservations but we could make a big impact in our own communities.

I would ask you to remember to pray for CHIEF as we are specifically involved in a significant gathering called, “Many Nations…One Saviour 2011.” It will be held in the Chicago area, TBA, in the Spring of 2011.

This year we are blessed to have a lot of great support and new members of the team. We are planning on having several churches and universities join us in presenting this year’s event.

The plan is to have the Native Ministry leaders come and share their hearts with several churches across Chicago and surrounding suburbs at their Sunday morning services. The leaders will also invite the people at those churches to come together later that evening, and to have a night of celebration and seeking God for His passion and plans for Native Ministry across America! What a great night of unity and worship and call to missions as we seek God and build bridges in Jesus name!

We are also working on scheduling the Native leaders to speak at local universities to share and call students to pray and ask God if Native Missions is a possible calling for their lives! Inviting them to join us at the end of the week on Sunday evening for the “Many Nations, One Savior – Conference & Celebration” night of vision, worship and praise!

Please, be praying for this event and the ministries and churches involved. Please, pray that God would be glorified and His Kingdom advanced through this event and that many people would attend and hear the call to reach the lost and hurting Native Nations with the hope and love of Jesus Christ!

I am sharing this with you and asking that you make it a matter of prayer by possibly contacting others in the Chicago area who may be interested in attending.

By the way, did you know that there are approximately 48,000 Native American / First Nations people living in the Greater Chicago area and not one Native church? We have to do something to change this picture across our nation.
